Evaluation

Overall i am very pleased with my final production and i feel that i have filled the purpose of it making sure it attracts the correct target audience and to make it look as professional as a real life production.

The ways my media product uses, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products by sticking to the horror aspect because our film opening shows the film gives a variety of sounds such as the heart beat noise, this will make the audience tense and have an irregular heart beat. We have also used a sound tack for the first part of the film (when the boy runs down the stairs). The sound also consists of the heart beat noise with deep notes to build tension and to signify something is going to happen. Below is the heart beat noise.

We challenge the real media horror productions by starting with a black blank screen with a police car siren which also provides narrative enigma and anchorage. We also challenge and develop the real media horror productions by going into a fast flowing opening shot of the character Jack running down the stairs; most horror films start with a slow opening shot, but our production gets straight to the point surprising the audience even more as we use camera angles such as close ups and extreme close ups and long shots also including the dutch angle, we used these shots because it shows venerability, isolation and that something is wrong.

One shot we did develop throughout the film was when we were pulling the camera back as if we were zooming out. The first time we achieved this was a disaster because the camera work was far too shaky, so we decided to use a skateboard as we didn't have the professional equipment. However using the skateboard made the shot look so much better from a visual aspect.
We also used camera angles such as high angles and low angles such as when the character Jack is running down the stairs it signifies someone is looking down on him (he is running away from someone).

We also challenge real horror media production openings by not having our credits at the end of the opening two minutes because the opening two minutes signify what the rest of the production (narrative) would be, also it provides anchorage because the audience may want to know what happens next. However our media production uses conventions of real horror productions by showing who the central protagonist is in the opening shot just like in the film Scream which is the victim who is being stork ed etc. Our media production is very different from other film openings as the first 28 seconds is a black blank screen with sounds (police car sirens, a tyre screech and a voice of a women telling the person to wake up along with a heart beat sound) so that it creates a narrative enigma and the audience wants to know what happens next.

However we have know changed this dew to the feedback, we have got two different shots which still fit with the sounds and it also makes the whole narrative of the film a lot clearer, so know there is no blank screen. Now the opening to our film gives the audience a clear view of the narrative it also is backed up by providing sufficient exposition, but does not necessarily take us beyond the equilibrium stage (which is an existing state of harmony). The shots we have added are the character Jack walking across the road (only showing his feet) and he stubble's as the sirens of the police car get closer and a tyre screech and then the screen goes blank so this means drama is created with this character which also shows that he is the central protagonist.

Towards the end of the film we have added some additional shots such as filming in a car using a point of view shot so the camera work is a little shaky in some respects, but this could be seen as a documentary style also the titles are black and white this is also used in documentaries, however we used it because most horror films use it to signify a low budget, but we decided to change to white font to a blue tint to signify a super natural effect just like in the film 'Scream' when there is use of blue tint on the house in the opening shot however it would be good to make the titles more sophisticated (make them more interesting). Also as each title appears on screen there is a noise of a heart beat (a pump) to create tension. We used a serif font which also signifies a horror with the sharpness of the lettering. Also at the end we decided to have a blank screen with titles and we thought it was boring (the feedback suggested this also) so we added some shots to create anchorage such as adding a shot of an ambulance and the journey to the hospital so the audience want to know what happens next. However as an alternative we could have put the titles on screen where the shots were filmed through the town and countryside.

My media product represents particular social groups such as the types of class like the upper middle class, lower middle class and working class (C1C2DE). my product achieves this by not having big star(s) in it or there names which is topical of a horror because the characters generally get killed of anyway. However i could argue that my production would appeal to the upper class and upper middle class (ABC1) because there's use of a counter type in it; the girl in the scary character and the boy Jack is the total opposite, he is scared, venerable and the victim. Also the type of social groups represented phychographic profile would be people who listen to heavy metal rock bands because this genre of music is associated with horror, also for people who listen to music such as heavy metal but i think that the stereotype of a goth could be related in this production as the long dark hair and black clothing could signify a Gothic style.

The kind of institution that might distribute my production would be somebody like Warp X or Film 4 because they are funded by the UK film council and also our film is set in Yorkshire so it would be another good way to distribute our film through these companies with the help of Screen Yorkshire. I would also advertise it at a premier to get audience feedback and to see if it's worth hitting the screes. I would also put it onto social networks such as YouTube to get feedback to find out what the target audience thinks. Our film could go straight to video production because the increasingly tough world of cinema as the correct funding required can not be given all the time. I could also distribute this film to Icon Movies as they are a UK film distributor and distribute a wide variety of films in terms of genre.

My audience for this film would be people aged 15 to 25 (youth) because the shots are fast and flowing and the transitions are extremely fast in various areas. Also the main characters which appear in my production are both aged 17 years old and also the main setting is in a school so the audience would feel comfortable with the setting as most people today have had some sort of education, weather it's University or Secondary School or even College. The audience for the ethnicity aspect would be that although all the characters in the production are Caucasian, it doesn't mean that it doesn't appeal to other ethnic cultures, however if we did add some other characters who have a different ethnic backgrounds we would draw in a larger target audience.

The gender for this production looks towards targeting male and female audiences as males generally like horror films as they are mainly male-oriented, but it also appeals to females because the girl in the production is the scary character and it's unusual for this to happen in a horror movie. The target audience for my film also represents sexuality as the pink pound is drawn in because the male character Jack is the scared one which is a counter type because the main stereotype for a male is to be the dominant one and to be the hero etc. Also the class status is involved in my audience because it would mainly appeal to the C1C2DE classes because there are no big stars in the production and its not a sophisticated text although i could argue it could be for ABC1 classes as there is the use of a counter type which could make the complex of the film challenging.

The things which i have learnt about the new technologies from the process of constructing my production would be things such as using the software and hardware. I have learnt many things about the software we used which was imovie 06 which i have hardly used. The things which i learnt were things such as using editing techniques like when we added our production logo, you have to take an effect called the 'Ken Burns Effect' which allows you to re size the image to the appropriate size. I have also learnt how to insert music and get the timing correct to match up with the clips and how to lower the audio volume or higher it or to even make it fade in and out. There are some disadvantages of the software though because it is quite basic as threes not a lot of audio and visual effects to choose from (it's not professional enough).

I have learnt quite a few things using the hardware but not as much as the software. However the things which i have learnt are things such as how to alter the white balance on the camcorders so that each clip looks as if it has the same lighting effect and there are no flairs of light. Also we used a tripod which i have never used before, but i can now see why they are so useful as they make each camera shot so much smoother when using a panning or tracking shot (the camera work is not shaky).
If we had a large budget to produce our film it would have been good to have used a stedi cam for the point of view shot because at some points in the shot the camera work was very shaky but there's nothing what we could do about it. Also when we filmed the high angle shot looking down on the stairs when the character Jack was running down the stairs it would have been quite good if we had a chance to use a miniature crane. However these aspects come at a high cost, some of the camera's are worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Looking back at my preliminary task and know looking at my final production i can say that i have learnt lots. First of all i can say that my prelim task doesn't look professional at all compared to my final production. I think i have achieved this by using different shot types, but also using them in an effective and use full way such as using the zooming in of the character Jack and then zooming out to make it look like a continuous shot but in different locations. I have also learnt that each cut visually looks more professional because in the prelim task we included jump cuts (which were unintentional)when using the match on action shot. You can see this below when the boy holds onto the door handle pulling it down and in the next shot the door doesn't open after a few second so the timing was completely wrong, but know this has made me realise how to get the timing perfect.

One main part that i can say i have learnt is that now i know how to use specific editing techniques in imovie such as using music and sound works throughout the production really well as it helps to signify your genre and attract your target audience.
